September 10, 2026 - Kamyar Keshavarz, a graduate student in Dr. Mo Ebrahimkhani’s laboratory, has published a new perspective in Cell Systems titled “Synthetic Tissue Ecology: Ecological Control of Developmental Self Organization Across Scales.” The article was co authored with Dr. Mo Ebrahimkhani.
The perspective introduces the concept of synthetic tissue ecology, a framework that applies principles from ecology to understand and engineer how cells interact, compete, cooperate, and organize into complex tissues.
By considering developing tissues as dynamic ecosystems, the authors explore how controlling cellular interactions across biological scales could enable more robust and predictable engineering of organoids, embryoids, and other regenerative systems. The framework offers a new perspective for designing complex tissues and advancing approaches in synthetic biology and regenerative medicine.
