September 10, 2026 - Mohammad Taheri, a graduate student in Dr. Mo Ebrahimkhani’s laboratory, has published a new review titled “Synthetic Developmental Engineering of Human Liver Organogenesis” in Development, a leading peer reviewed journal in developmental biology. The article was co authored by Yuda Xiang and Dr. Mo Ebrahimkhani.
The review explores how developmental biology, synthetic biology, stem cell engineering, and computational approaches can be integrated to move beyond simply growing organoids toward engineering how cells communicate, organize, and mature.
Using the liver as a key example, the authors highlight strategies to improve tissue organization, maturation, vascularization, and function. The review also discusses how these advances can improve organoids as predictive New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) for studying human development and disease, drug discovery, and regenerative medicine.
